In 2002, Belgian Technical Cooperation launched a programme aimed at assisting the Mozambican government to (re)construct and equips a number of health facilities that had been washed away by devastating floods in 2000 in the provinces of Maputo, Gaza, Inhambane and Sofala. So far 30 urban and rural health units (including some houses for staff) have been completed. The design of the newly built health centres takes account of the latest demographic trends.
Preparations for the second phase of the programme were initiated in July and included an evaluation of the plan to construct a new district hospital in the District of Mapai, province of Gaza, to provide healthcare for people living in three of the remotest districts of the province. Phase 2 also includes the refurbishment of one hospital in Maputo and eight health centres in the provinces of Inhambane and Sofala as well as the rehabilitation of road infrastructure, Avenida Milagre Mabote e ruas adjacentes, in the City of Maputo
